Westminster set to snuff out last surviving old gas lamps
Westminster city council has just ended consultation on its plans to convert 299 remaining gas streetlights to electricity, saying LED lights are environmentally better and easier to maintain. A decision is expected soon.
The plan has met some opposition from both residents and heritage campaigners who claim the council’s reasons are not watertight and that there are alternative ways of retaining the gas lit lamps.
